I have created and developed a jazz magazine, my magazine looks analogous to other jazz magazines due to the fact that it has conventions of a typical jazz magazine as explained below in the research section. Throughout the development of my final magazine cover, contents page and double page spread the colours Purple, Yellow and Black were kept consistent (house style) these three colours brings out the regularity and consistency of the three products created to be moulded into one product the magzine. This also shows the user/target audience that this is a professional magazine that has the same colours, same text on the double page spread and many other features that are consistent for the magazine to look professional for the users.
I would prefer a large distribution company to distribute my jazz magazine as it is guarnatiable you would sell a greater number of magazines, I would like my magazine to be distrubuted bya large firm that distributes nationally and later develop and sell this magazine internationally/ globally into other countries such as America where magazines distributing and publishing firms have a greater market share in not only would I make alot of money also provide a variety to the audience as people globally like jazz magazines/music. If I was to really place my jazz magazine on the market then I would be competing against exsisting major jazz magazine companies such as magazine distribution companies may distribute my jazz magazine, such as 'Down Beat' and 'Jazz Time'. Which would make it increasingly competitive and therefore difficult to attain a greater number of sales and therefore a greater amount of profit.
Who would be your target audience for your magazine? How would you attract your target audience?
I felt that I became more audacious during the final production as I made it look more realistic by using relevant colours to my genre(jazz). I also carrieed out back gournd research (questionnaires) inorder to gather ideas. I also feel that applying effects and manipulating them made my magazine look paramount.
If you have a music magazine to create you have to make sure and take into account if every feature replicates and imitates the genre of the magaine. However a school magazine can be illustrated in many different styles and depict itself in many diverse ways.
All my creations and developments
Preliminary Tasks
First School Magazine
First School Contents Page
Main Front Cover
Main Contents Page
Main Double - Page Spread
Preliminary Research
As you can see from the second contents page
mock up there are clear standing out titles and a logo adjacent to the title at the top of the page. The logo is placed at the top left hand side, this logo is placed there to make it memorable. In the centre of everything there are page numbers on the right hand side and the titles on the left hand side, so that it is easier for the audience to interpret.
As you can see from my first mock up, the main title is at the top of the page reading 'Lordswoods Amazing transformations ', it is written in a large font size to make it more appealing to the audience. The main image in the middle is a image of a school building it is used to convey the message that this is a school magazine and not any old magazine. There are strap lines of different sizes and different articles to make it a little interesting. There are two incentives at the bottom of the magazine cover this is done to encourage the audience to read the magazine and go ahead.
There are straplines that are spreadout across the page. The main title 'Lordswood's Media talent' is underlined four times to show how significant the title is. The school buildings corner is displayed in the middle of the page this shows how symmetrically important this magazine is to the audience.
Third front page mockup
As you can see from the mockup their is a main title at top of the page on the left hand side also at the top their is a logo, so that it makes it easier for the magazine to be recognised. The person must be a young female or male as it is a school magazine. There are two diferent incentives at the bottom of the page to persuade the audience to read ahead. The straplines must be in order in page number order and be below one another, so that it looks orderly.
Fourth front page mock up
There is going to be a main image in the centre of a person holding a book/paper reading. At the top there is going to be a title 'Lordswoods media talent' and below the title in a smaller size is going to be written 'Issue number 1' to make it look less imperative and less striking than the title. there is going to be a diminutive strapline on the right hand side to make it look distinct. There is an incentive at the bottom of the page to persuade the audience to interpret the information on the front cover easily.
Overall I think that all the magazine front cover mockup's are suitable for my final magazine front cover. Know I have to make a decision of which magazine front cover I should create and design.
I have finaly decided to design the fourth front page mockup, since I feel it is the most appropriate for my genre of school magazine. Below is the completed version of my final preliminary front cover.
Final Preliminry - Front cover
Know that I have completed all my preliminary task I am know going to begin the intermediate task.
I am going to be creating and developing my magazine front cover, magazine contents page and magazine double page spread, however before I begin the construction and cultivation of my magazine I first have to carry out some research and gather some ideas of ways I could present my magazine. Throughout this research I am going to draw up mockups and have scanned in magazine pages relevant to my specific research.
I am going to be researching some magazine covers a variety of magazine covers including 'Jazz Time' and 'Down Beat'. Both of the magazines have the same genre of Jazz. I decided to base my coursework around jazz due to the unpopularity of jazz music and jazz magazines, my aim is to make this jazz magazine sell and to make it look very fascinating as well as appealing to my target audience. I researched for some jazz magazines to gain more ideas as well as stimulation as this would help me, when I would be designing and constructing my own jazz magazine.
Jazz Time
Firstly I am going to be examining the 'Jazz time' magazine. I think the colour of the title red is quite a beautiful colour to use on a front cover of a magazine as the colour red helps the audience to be magneised to the magazine. Using bright colours is a quite good technique to attract the audience to the magazine as a a magazine has only one chance until it is picked up by one person. Audiences can easily recognise some magazines from there front cover from the style and lay out of the front cover. This magazine has a red title people may easily recognise this magazine as there are, so many red shades they may recognise the red shade, and the style of the title.
The style of the text of the title is moderately simple and at a slant which makes it easier for the audience to identify, recognize and read. I would not like to use this slant style on my magazine cover as it looks less realistic at slant style.
There is a central image of an individual person holding a cello in his hand. I would use this image if I was producing this magazine cover as the person is holding a jazz instrument. This image with a jazz instrument assists the audience to identify the magazine as other collections of the magazine might always have a jazz instrument with a person posing away. The person is posing in a way to illustrate that jazz music needs to be heard and the only way you'll find that is by reading this jazz magazine. The person is wearing black clothes which makes the strap lines more easier to read and therefore magnetising the audience greatly. The main image goes over the main title at the top of the magazine cover this conveys the message that the title is so well known it doesn't need to be read.
The strap lines are written in different styles to make them more attractive and more interesting compared to other magazines. The text also uses lots of capital letters to a draw attention from the audience. Capital letters usually convey the message that someone is shouting, the capital letters look like the maker of this magazine cover was shouting and was trying to convey a message to its jazzy audience that this jazz magazine would get you into the swing for some real 'jazz time'. I would not like to use capital letters for my magazine cover as they look rude and may not look as attractive to audience.
The magazine cover from the right of the magazine cover (near his wrist with a watch) looks quite vague. I would not make my magazine cover looking vague as it illustrates an image to the audience that the magazine contains very little information and looks slightly tedious although 'you should never judge a magazine by its front cover', however most audiences do.
The website at the bottom is part of the strap lines which not only is part of the strap lines, however also acts as a border. The strap line at the top of the cover has a black background which acts as a border around the main image and the main title. I would like to use these black strip lines partially on the left and right hand side of the cover. At the bottom of the cover I would like an eye catchy phrase, persuading the audience to open the magazine for example 'free c-d if you buy this magazine' or ' Free issue if you buy this magazine' or ' greatest 50 hits inside'. These phrases are generally written to persuade the audience to buy the magazine. Also right at the bottom is a website in a bright colour in a black background which makes the audience believe that the magazine can be trusted.
The bar code at the bottom of the page is behind the strap line to make it less interesting and less appealing to the audience and to make it look as if the strap lines are more important. I would like to have a tiny barcode at the bottom on the left hand side of the magaizne cover, it is tiny to make it look less interesting and less attractive.
Overall I feel this magazine is not quite appealing, because it just has a plain slanted title, it has a person in the middle of the page with a jazz instrument, which is meant to be on the strap lines. The person is also directly looking at the audience, normal front cover people do not look directly at the audience depending on the style of the magazine. There are no effects on the background colour or any effects on the title, image, strap lines. Without any effects it makes a magazine look very dull and not very interesting at all.
If this was my magazine I would add some effects in the background. I would use a black background colour and I would use a blurry effect in the background to make the central image stand out. I would leave the title in a slant effect as it looks simple but quite effective. I would take a medium shot of the photograph as it makes the audience feel there is an equal amount of gap between the audience and the person in the photograph. I would like to use a black background as it looks quite effective and orderly.
I would use more strap lines to make it look like a normal magazine that is packed with lots of information. I would make the strap line colours all of different colours, inorder to make the front page look beautiful and actually fit in with the features surrounding the strap line. If the magazine was trying to make the image standout the border should have gone all around the magazine. The barcode should have been smaller to make the main features stand out. There should have been 2-3 main colours on the front cover, so that the audience can easily identify and recognize the magazine when it is lying on the shelf for sale. This magazine does not have 2-3 colours on the magazine cover, it has orange, black, red, white and brown. If this was my magazine I would have used 2-3 main colours including: black, dark red and dark brown. The main colours I would like to use on my magazine cover is purple, yellow and black. Although it may not be attractive as the other magazines on the shelf it would be easier for those people who read the Jazz magazines as they would be able to find the magazine with dark colours easily recogniseable.
The main focal point for Jazz time is the main image, which can have an impact on the reader as they may be persuaded to buy the magazine, because the person on the photograph may be liked by many fans or the person may not be liked, therefore would impact the company's sales as they may decrease. I think that covering the title slightly with the image is an excellent technique, because it helps new readers to understand the popularity of the magazine. The person on the image covers the bottom of the letters 'zz' from the word 'jazz' on the page. The hat is quite straight it acts as a straight line which blends into the lettering of the 'zz '. The letter' e' could have been shown to make 'time' more easier to read. I would like to use this effect on my magazine, for example I would like the person's head to cover the title partially, to make it look as if its well known.
Down Beat
The other magazine I have researched is 'Down Beat'. This magazine looks moderately interesting as it has many strap lines, it has a person who is posing on the strap lines smiling directly at the audience. The person is sitting in a room and the furniture in the background has been blurred, to make the main character prominent. I would not like to use this blur effect in the background as I would like to have a plain black background. The relaxed person is posing on a comfortable chair illustrating the fact that it is a relaxing magazine and that this jazz magazine can be read in a relaxing way and is quite comfortable to read. The lighting is from the left shining on his face as that is the point at which the audience's eyes fall on first.
The image is taken with a medium shot to make it look there is an equal amount of space between the audience and the individual, it also makes it comfortable for the audience to distinguish, because if the shot was a close up, it would look funny as if everything is squashed up on the page, however it would look odd if a far shot was taken as it makes it look tedious. If a close up shot or a far shot was taken it would look equally bad, therefore it is best to have a medium shot.
The title which is written in white, huge, capital letters with the letters 'B', 'E' and 'A' are covered with the characters head, this creates a feeling to the audience that the magazine is quite popular. The title is also written in capital letters to attract the audience. It is written in a style different from the other text in the strap lines, sub headings, which is used to magnetise the audience. The letter 'N' is written in a style which acts as an arrow to roll the audiences eyes down to the main image towards where the main light is shining on the main persons head. The letters are quite straight, which conveys teh message that the magazine is the perfect jazz magazine that can ever be read. The strap lines have capital letters which look slightly similar to the title 'Down beat'. The text size of the strap lines are quite small to convey the message that the main image, main title are the most important features on the cover. The famous people's names are written on the strap lines in capital letters to attract the audience and the small detail of the famous people is written in small letters in a slant effect as they are not so essential as the famous people's names.
There is a main subheading 'Prime TIME' which is written on the bottom strap line. It is written near the middle of the main image to make the audiences eyes roll down slightly. Above the main subheading there is a small phrase written in quotations 'Legends of Jazz' this phrase makes the audience feel that Jazz music is a classic and that this magazine is a classic jazz magazine. The style of the text is different, for example the main title has a different style of text compared to the strap lines text and the style of the subheadings. The different styles are used to make it interesting to read for the audience. There is more of a dark back ground behind the main title at the top as the colour of the title is white this contrast of black and white makes it clear for the audience to see. The subheading and the strap lines are written in grey to make it clear to the audience that the title and the image are the main features on the cover. The different styles of text convey the message that this magazine can be read any where at any time, even if you are cooking, watching television, listening to the radio, in the bus where ever and when ever this jazz magazine can be read.
French Jazz magazine
I have annotated a french jazz magazine. As you can see there is a naked male individual on the front cover.'JAZZ' is written in a elephant, large style font, there is also part of the title 'Magazine' which is covered by the male persons head. I think that covering the title with the main title is quite effective as it makes the audience think that the magazine is well known and that the magazine title does not need to be read fully. As you can see from the strap lines they are placed in places where there is a plain background (mainly above both of the shoulders of the male). The kicker 'ZAPPA' is written in a slant way where it is parallel to the males arm and the arms also act as an underlining. There is a phrase below the kicker 'FAUX ROCKEUR OU VRAI JAZZMAN' this phrase gets the audience thinking this phrase translates as false rocker now true jazz man ,this phrase gets the audience thinking that even people who enjoy rock music and therefore buy rock magazines can manipulate to be jazz lovers and read jazz magazines, this then persuades the person to buy the jazz magazine and try it out. The male person looks as if he is a 'rockeur' (rocker) rather than a 'ou vrai jazzman' (jazz lover).
Overall I think that this magazine cover is reasonably effective as it makes people think twice whether or not they should turn from being a rock fan to a jazz fan, which then persuades the audience to buy this jazz magazine rather than other magazines for example the rock magazine.
Jazz Times
I am going to be researching another magazine cover, I would be talking about this American jazz magazine. There is immediate attention drawn to the central huge funny looking image (looks funny). It looks as if the person is going to blow up which makes the reader read ahead. The title is written in white as the background is mainly black, so the white is used to make it stand out. Above the title 'Jazz Times' there is a phrase written ' WIN TWO SELMER SAXES' which acts as an incentive to the audience to buy the jazz magazine as they could be winning tickets. Parts of the strap line has a small chunk of text along with an image, the image is used to attract the audience and the famous persons name is written in bright red for attraction. The famous peoples names are written in capital letters below each other, however each name is written in a smaller size as the other two names are surname. The names are written in white to attract the audience the two colours black and white are opposite colours these opposite colours helps it to be clear for the audience to read. The text beneath the white names are written in a smaller size and the colour is grey which is less attractive to the audience. All the famous peoples names are also written in capital letters which maintains the consistency throughout the magazine cover. The shot of the main image is close up shot which looks funny, because usually magazine covers display a medium shot image.
Overall I think this magazine cover is quite effective in terms of the layout and how it relates to the jazz genre, it has an excellent close up image as it fits in with the surroundings, but is used to make it appealing to the audience. Finally I have analysed a number of magazine covers, which helped me to beget plenty of ideas mutually. I have found a number of consistensies from my magazine covers. The jazz magazines mainly have black backgrounds which goes with the jazz genre. Also I have found that the titles of the magazines are quite large, elephant font styles and are partially covered by the main image to convey that the magazines are well known and that this particular magazine does not need to be recognised by the title, it can easily be recognised by the features and the very own style of the magazine cover.
The jazz magazines use 2-3 main colours to keep it consistent, simple and quite effective. Two main colours are used in the strap lines to make some parts stand out such as the famous people's names and the brief information is written in a different style, colour, size to make it less attractive to the audience.
I have taken a number of photographs using a digital Fuji camera I have taken medium shots for my magazine cover, as shown from my research I notified that most images on the front jazz magazine covers exhibit medium shot photographs in order to make the audience feel comfortable to view. The messages the magazines are trying to convey are being clearly displayed. The images that I am going to be taking are going to be medium shots, so that the audience feel confortable during the time they are going to be examining the main shot, as most jazz magazine covers I have researched have a plain black background to make the main image standout, not only the image, but the strap lines can stand out. I am going to be taking a number of shots at different angles, so I could choose which image was the best as well as most suitable for my audience. I have to make sure the lighting on the features that I wanted to emphasise were in the spot light, so it attracts the audiences eyes straight to that particular point. I am going to be making the lighting effect in the dark and the features that I wanted to emphasize, I am going to be shineing lighting lamps on specific features. I would like one person posing for my front cover standing up , the image must cover the title slightly and the person posing must have a jazz instrument for example a guitar, or a saxophone. I would like to take the image at a higher position at an angle and tilt the camera slightly, so that the waste and up wards was in the image which is called a medium shot. I would like to position the main image of the individual on the side, so that the strap lines look neat, as they do in most of the jazz magazine covers I have looked at during my research. I have to position the main image in the corners of the whole page, so that it follows the visual as well as the verbal path of being on motion of the viewers eye's that usually follows through the page. The focal points of the secondary/tertiary of where they are positioned grab the audiences attention, for example my focal point is going to be the main image in the centre.
During my research I carried out a number of questionnaires to many different people. From my research I found that what kind of colours are expected from a typical jazz magazine most people wrote:purple, yellow and black. I also found out the type of images that are expected from a jazz magazine many people answered that they expect to see one person with a muscial jazz instrument. I also asked the question of 'how much you would purchase this jazz magazine for?' The main price range I found was £2.99 I decided to have £2.99 and not £3.00, because it makes the audience think that it is very cheap. I decieded to place a bit of everything on the jazz magazine cover, because people agreed that there should be abit of everything instead of just some typical features. Many people also agreed with the fact that I should place very little images on my front cover with added effects to make them very interesting. I also made the audience choose which style of text they preferred and most people preferred the plain title text and many preferred to have stars around the title for the contents page .
I have thought that I would like to have a medium-shot image so that it becomes my main focal point. I am going to have a main title that has the Elephant style as most jazz magazines have that particular style.
My magazine designs
I have drawn a few mock ups and how I would like to design my magazine front cover. Firstly I had to draw nine equal boxes which follows the law of thirds. The law of thirds explains that you are only allowed to have very little in the middle box. As you can see from the 'Jazz time' magazine this law was not applied as the main image was in the middle. However as you can see from the 'Down beat' magazine the law of thirds was applied. There is nothing in the middle space it is left blank. From this I have decided to create a magazine with the middle box empty following the law of thirds.
I am going to be thinking of a magazine title that is quite simple, but gives a brief description of the genre of this magazine is. Here are some example are:
Jazzing it
Jazz up
All- jazz
Up Beat Jazz
Jazzing it up
I have made my final decision the title that I think would sound quite effective and help keep the title memorable is 'Jazz up'.
Ist mockup of a front cover
As you can see from the mock up on the right hand side, I would like to have a logo on the left handside at the top to make it easier for the audience to recognise.
I am also thinking of having an image of two people both female and male.
There would be a strap line and the size of the text must be small as the main image needs to stand out. As you can see there are 4 lines over lapping each other this follows the law of thirds. My front cover follows the law of thirds. The woman must be showing her instrument to the audience (cello) and the male person standing up behind the woman must be holding a jazz instrument (guitar) they must be playing here instruments as they are in a jazz choir. There is also going to be a slogan 'Jazz music of the times' this slogan is used to make the front cover interesting and memorable for the audience.
Overall I think that this magazine cover is quite effective as follows the rule of thirds and has many excellent features.
2nd Mockup of a front cover
Above is my second front cover mock up, there is going to be a barcode at the top of the page. The title is going to be at a slant to make it look significant. The straplines are going to over lap the main image, this means that the image has to be partially water coloured. There are going to be images and text along the side (strapline) at a slant to go along with the slanty title. There is also going to be a kicker at the bottom of the page to make it look memorable.
Overall I think that this magazine cover is quite effective as there are many typical features as a normal magazine encloses.
I am going to be using a sub-heading at the bottom of the page that acts as an incentive for the creator as it motivates the audience and therefore persuades them to buy the magazine. For example :
Best 100 tracks to listen to
Rich list of 50 top jazz muscicans
20 jazz muscians hit the jazz floor
I have decieded that I would like to have '20 jazz muscians that hit the jazz floor'.
I have decided to have an image on the side of the magazine cover, so that it pursues the rule of thirds. You do not have to make an image central in order to magnetise the maximum attention, you can also have an image on the side which would make it look more effective as 'down beat' magazines do. I have decided to have the strap lines text size small as it is less important compared to the titles and the main image. I have decided to have the famous people's names in small sizes, however they must begin with a capital letter I do not like to have full capital letters due to the fact it looks as if they are shouting.'Down beat' has used this technique of using capital letters which look as if the person is shouting at the audience. Every little detail that attracts the audiences attention all sums up to make the whole magazine magnetising referring to 'Down beat' . I have taken a photograph of a male character playing a guitar who may be placed on my front cover. This shot is medium shot. as the male character is showing his waist and above. This image would be placed on the right hand side, as you can see I am following the rule of thirds and placing the image on the side.
As you can see from the mock up below the title is' JAZZ UP' this was purposely written in capital letters to convey the message strongly that it is time to 'JAZZ UP' . The style of the lettering is going to be very straight lined, there are going to be no curly flicks at the ends of the corners. I also found that most jazz magazines have black characters posing, I found that the roots of jazz music originated from Jamaica during the slavery times, a majority of the slaves were black people and from there, a majority of black people in to days society still listen to jazz music and play jazz music. This is the reason why a majority of black people pose on front jazz magazine covers, to attract particular audiences.
I have also used a phrase "Jazz music of the times" makes the magazine look special also makes the jazz magazine specific to jazz which is better for audiences that only have an interest in jazz. I have made all my mock - up designs of the way I would like my magazine to be. My next job is to create and develop a magazine cover actually on Adobe Photoshop.
I have placed a small barcode at the top of the cover I would like the title to be at a slant, and the font should be elephant.
I would like to place images on the right
handside to make it look attractive. There would be an image water coloured in the back ground to make the main images to stand out. There would be a kicker at the bottom of the cover, so it acts as an incentive to the audience to buy the magazine. I would like the images to be slanty to make it look appealing and persuading the audience ot buy the magazine.
This is a fourth mock up of my front cover. There would be a huge image on the front cover . There would be a huge title at the top of the cover in a font style of elephant 'Jazz up'.
There would be strap lines on the outlining of the main image there would be a maximum of three external images on the strapline.
I would like to be creating a magazine cover on 'Adobe Phototshop' as the software allows me to make complex designs which other soft wares do not have such as publisher, or FireFox. 'Adobe Photoshop' also presents its features in a better structural way which helps me to create as well as design my magazine cover well.
As you can see from my magazine cover below, I have used a male guitar jazz player who is posing in a way that does not look directly at the camera. The actual shot was also a medium shot, I used a medium shot, because the magazines that I had looked at had used medium shots. I also felt that the medium photograph shot is quite comfortable to use rather than a close up shot and a far distant shot. I decided to have a dark background. I decided on using a black background as it looked quite effective compared to the other dark coloured backgrounds, I am using black as teh magazines that I have researched mainly have black backgrounds. Another colour that I would like to use is Purple and Yellow. I have decided to use yellow as from my research I have found that most magazines use colours relating to the main image, I am also going to be useing a bright purple colour as it goes well with yellow. I felt that these colours llook quite representative for a jazz magazine. I developed the main central photograph by making the male quite bright, so that it looks as if there were some bright lights used. The image also had to be cut out using a 'magic wand tool' which cut the image out from the back ground. I decided to cut the main image out most magazines that I have analysed had the main image cut out. From there I had to make the image slightly brighter and by doing this it makes the main central image standout from the other features on the magazine such as: main title, subheadings and the strap lines. From there I had to select the image and copy and paste it into another adobe photoshop document where I could then design the rest of my magazine cover. I had then manipulated the background of my magazine cover into a black colour. I chose to use a black background and not a light pink, blue, range colour because the 'down beat' magazine and the 'Jazz times' magazines displayed dark black backgrounds. Also I have deceided to have a plain background as the 'Jazz times' and 'Jazz time' display plain backgrounds which look quite simple and makes the mian features stand out. I personally thought that the dark background was more effective than a light back ground as my research shown that most backgrounds a dark. Firstly I selected an area which I then filled in a bright yellow colour matching the actual guitar colour. I used a bright background colour for the title as it seemed that I would like the title to standout as I wanted the audience to identify as well as easily recognise my jazz magazine on the shelf in a store. I also used a purple background colour of the title in order for it to go with the yellow title and go along with the theme of the jazz magazine. The theme colours of this jazz magazine are yellow, purple and black. I had finished typing out my strap lines and making sure the famous people's names are written in a slightly bigger size. I had purposely chose to have the famous people's names at a slightly larger font as it attracted the audiences attention immediately especially if the text is bright and is written in a larger size from the other text, underneath this large text I had to write a brief description about the famous people's names. I had purposely written the brief descriptions in a smaller size, and I had made the text at a slant as it was less attractive compared to the names, the small text also persuades the audience to read on. I had chosen to write straplines in yellow, because if I used a dark colour then the text would not be shown in the dark background. I have slanted the brief description as they look more better, also accroding to the 'DOWN BEAT' magazine cover there is slanted text beneath the titles of the contents. At the bottom of the magazine cover I have also decieded to have a very large chunk of text whcih cats as an incentive to the audience to buy this magazine, as it looks slightly vague at the bottom all black. I had written an incentive to the audience 'top 20 jazz musicians hit the jazz stage' which persuades the audience to read on about the actual top 20 jazz musicians that did hit the jazz floor. I have placed a small Bar code in the right hand corner of the magazine, I have deliberatley resized the barcode to a smaller one to make it less attractve and to make it not part of my magazine. As from my magazine covers the barcodes have been resized to a smaller size, in some cases they have been placed behind the starplines ('Jazz time') to make them look less appealing. As you can see I have placed the male persons head on top of the title, I used this technique, so that the audience feel they can easily recognise and identify the magazine it also makes new readers think this magazine is well known that it does not need to show its letters as they are, so well recognized by many people.
Image of Final Front Cover
Contents page - research
I am going to be researching some jazz contents pages know that I have completed my magazine cover. If I research for a jazz contents pages, it would help me to create and develop my contents page, and therefore helps me to gain a greater number of marks.I have copied and pasted some contents pages and analysed them well. The analysis part would help me to understand what kind of features are required for a jazz magazine contents.
As you can see on the left hand side the genre of the contents page is romance. I have annotated this magazine contents page. Although this magazine contents page is not the same as my genre I can still gather some ideas of ways that I can present my contents page. From all the ideas I gather I would be able to bring them together and create a fabulous contents page.
On the left handside of the magazine cover there are many images which overlap one another other. The images also have page numbers on them which makes it easier for the audience to understand and make there way around the magazine more easily.
On the left hand side there is magazine contents page it is about home improvements and design of dwellings.
There is a title at the top of the contents page 'home improvements and design magazine' which gives an insight to the audience of what this magazine is about.
It then has a main title of 'Contents' this is writen in grey they are the largest letters on the page and thats what helps the reader to understand easily that this is a contents page of home improvement and design.
Below the main titles there are subheadings written in bold and there is little detail below the the headings to give the audience a little insight of what that particular subheading article is about. Adjacent to the subheadings are page numbers these allow the user to look across easily what page a particular article is on, this helps them to make there way around the magazine easily.
On the right hand side of the contents page there are a number of images which keep the audience interested. Also the images help the audience to identify what kind of magazine and genre this is and if this partiular magazine meets my requirements. Within each image there are page numbers for what pages each image and based on that particular image what that article related to the image is on, this makes it easier for the audience to interpret.
Below are some mockup that I have created:
As you can see from this contents page mockup as you can see I would like to have curly arrows coming from the titles of the contents page displaying the page numbers, making it easier for the audience to interpret.
I have also decieded to design a logo which would make teh magazine memorable and easily recognisable by its audience. I would like to have a large title which can be eaily read. At the bottom of the as you can see page I have placed a few incentives and more about the contents page which persuades the audience to read ahead.
I would like the back ground colour to be a pale colour as the front cover would be.
Overall I think this mockup is quite a unique type of style which would help the audience to recognise the magazine contents page. It also provides a variety to the audience so they do not become.
As you can see from the mock up below like teh one above there would be a same logo on the left hand side top corner to make the magazine memorable. There would be a clear title at the top of the page this would enable the audience to interpret the contents page easily. The titles of the pages are going to be in a slanty effect. At the bottom of the contents page there would be further titlesw to make it interesting. There would also be a title going down on the side 'Jazz up' to make it interesting instead of having a full title along the top of the contents page. Overall I think this contents page is very well designed as it has very unique ideas which make it look interesting than other magazine contents pages haveing the typical features only and not using tehre imagination to manipulate those typical features into there own style which would make the magazine contents pages very unique.
As you can see from my third mockup for my contents page I have used a logo on the left hand side at the top of the page. I would have 'Jazz up' at the top of the page to make it easily recogniseable that they are interpreting the correct contents page.
There is also the titles and the pages seperated from each other to make interpretation of the contents easier for the audience. I have decieded to have a number of images on the side to make the contents interesting. At the bottom of the contents page I have decided that I would like to have a C-D being for sale to the audience inorder to keplp the audience intereste, it is also used as an incentive to look deeper into the magazine.
I have decided to keep the colours consistent through the magazine including the magazine cover, contents page and the double page spread, so that it can be easily recognised by the audience also it helps the magazine look like an actual magazine. I would have some images on the contents page to make it actually look like an appealing contents page. I will have a lovely title that would have some sort of effect on it . I would have simple titles on the contents page as well as page numbers adjacent to the titles. I have to remeber that the contents page, magazine cover and the double page spread must have typical features as a typical magazine does.
As you can see this above mock up this is exactly teh smae design that I would have as my contents page.
Know I am going to begin my contents page, using my ideas from my research and how I would like to present things on the page.
I have just completed the title and the effects surrounding the title.
I have know created and developed my jazz contents page. As you can see below my contents page I have created. I have added a glow effect onto the 'Contents page' title. There are some stars sprinkled around the title this adds an effect to make the title look appealing and outstanding at the top of the page. I have added effects to the contents page titles, because most of my contents pages have some sort of effects to make them stand out. The colour of the back ground is plum tree purple this colour was used to keep it consistent the yellow text is written in yellow, there are titles and adjacent to that are the page numbers. I made the page numbers adjacent to the titles because the contents page for the wedding magazine had used this idea which made it look perfect.
I had kept the size and font style consistent as this is a feature of a typical magazine contents page.
I have added a number of original photographs that I have taken using a fuji digital camera.
There are effects added to the images, for example the images are moulded into shapes, they are moulded into a variety of shapes to make it look more attractive also the images have brightness added to them, to make them look more suited to the jazz contents page. I have applied a dark plum tree colour on the background inorder to maintain the consistency throughout the pages of the magazine. Some magazines have a bright or a dark background depending on their target audiences and from their research . For example from my research I found that many jazz contents pages, front pages and double page spreads have dark backgrounds and they are also consistent therefore my magazine pages need to have a dark background and need to maintain the consistency levels throughtout the magazine.I have added effects to the images as images with effects added to them are seen to be more attractive than simple images as displayed from my research (questionnarire). I have also chosen that particular style of text for my title as many people perfered to have this style from the questionnaire that was filled out by a number of people, also shown from my background research I found that many magazine contents pages used styles that were attractive as well as quite appealing to the audience. I have know created and developed my contents page to meet the typical features of a magazine.
Overall I think my contents page is quite effective, because many features are kept consistent, the features meet the jazz genre also many features are used to attract the target audience of my magazine.
As you can see above there is a questionnaire, they are based around my front cover and contents pages. The questionnaire above summarises all the feedback and results I recieved back from the audience. Most of the feedback that I was given gave me an impression that the audience would like the main image to have an effect added, the questionnaire also displayed that the audience expected purple, yellow, black and navy blue on my fornt cover. I found that the price expectance range for a jazz magazine was £1.00 - £4.50. 18/20 questionnaires would like to have an individual in particular a male as a male looks better in a jazz band. .Due to the fact that it is typical to have 2-3 main colours, I have decided to have Purple, black and yellow. Most of the answers from the questionnaires met the research from other magazines that I annotated therefore Icombined these togetehr to create and develop a front cover, contents page and doube page spread.
Research based on Double Page spread
I am going to be analysing double page spreads as part of my double page spread research. I am trying to gain ideas fro creating and developing my double page spread.
Double Page spread Number 1 this is a double page spread displaying many double page like features. The title of the double page spread is 'OFF THE MAP' it is written in a style to go with the genre of the magazine. It is in the same colour of the back ground colour of the main image. There are six different images they are mainly of people. There is text in white colour and it is written in a small font to make it look more intersting with the large images. The text is about the images, which makes
it interesting for the audience to read, for exampe if the audience want to know more about the images and what they are representing then they can read ahead. The images also have white borders which makes the main images stand out. There is a fire like look on the back ground image which blends in with the content of the images. There are devil like colours used which are red and black. These colours goes with text and the whole genre of the magazine. The main red parts are behind the text to make it look attractive and interesting to the audience, for them to read and interpret the text easily. I have analysed the other magazine double page spreads and the colours are kept consistent to the front cover, double page spread and the contents page. From the consistency of the colours the colours are kept consistent for example in this magazine the consistent colours that are used throughout the magazine are black and red.
Double page spread Number 2 I have researched around a second double page spread, I would be analysing this magazine double page spread as part of my research. This is part of the double page spread, the colours are kept consistent throughout this magazine the colours that are used are pink and white. The pink and white backgrounds are kept consistent these colours are
matching the colours on the contents page and the front cover,to make it look like a realistic magazine.
The text is black throughout the magazine. This black text is clearly written to make it easier and clearer for the audience to read and the font is also consistent to make it easier to read. The text is also very small and is written in, so much detail, so that it helps the audience to understand more about the context. Some words are coloqualised for example 'Mo-tional' which means that some words are written in a slangy form, this is done to engage with the audience and to convey the message that they are attracting those who understand this kind of colloqualised language (14- 21 teenagers). As you can see this page is split up into sections. For example the images are placed at the top of the page to attract the audience. The images are not merged into the text as some magazines have images in between the text. This is done to show this is a simple magazine, it is also done so that the age group that it is targetted at do not beocme confused. Double page spread Number 3 This is the third magazine double page spread I am going to be analysing to help me with the development of my ideas. The first thing that maintains my interest in this double page spread is the main image in the centre of the two whole pages. The image in the centre is taken at an angle to the left. the edges of the image are is also cracked it is not straight edged. There are all those images surrounding the main image these act as a border to the main image that is in the centre. There is text on the side of the main image this text is quite small and is consistent there are no words that are of different fonts, different colours or different sizes, all the text is consistent. However there is also text on the right hand side of the page it has a black background and the text is therefore white, this is suitable for the page as it makes it easier for the audience to read.
Below are some mockups for my Double page spread, I have designed a numbe rof Mockups for my double page spread so that I can gain some ideas of ways I can present my work.
Under each peice of the text that is written in white has an image under each peice to keep the audience interested.
I have nearly completed my double page spread research. Now I am going to be doing some mock ups and then analysing them if they are suitable for the jazz genre. I am going to be creating the first mock up that I have created.
As you can see my first mock up has an image in the background, the image in the background is going to be washed out, so that the main features stand out. There are going to be some images of a number of jazz muscians on the right handside of the double page spread. There is going to be some text on the left hand side of the double page spread.
I am know going to be analysing my second mockup that I have designed, created and developed. There is a chunk of text that would be at the top of the magazine double page spread. Then below the text there is going to be some text about the gossip (Jazz muscians private lives). Adjacent to the first chunk of text there is going to be some more text . The text would be based on interviews. There is going to be an interview, I would be interviewing a jazz celebrity. Having a questionnaire help maintains the interest of the audience. The interview is going to continue on the next page, so that it persuades the audience to read on, the first image is then used adjacent to the interview to maintain the high levels of concentration. There are three more images along the side to keep them interted. The images are also used on the double page spread, because if the audience is simply flcking through the magazine then they can be attracted to the images and therefore they are persuaded to read the text, as the images are going to be based on the text.
I am know going to be creating a third mock up, there is going to be a plain page on the right hand side of the magaizne double page spread. There is going to be a plain image of a male holding a jazz instrument, and there is going to be a title at the top and the adjacent to the image is going to be a phrase, the background colour is going to be greyish which goes with the image. The main image is going to be staurated this means it is going to greyish, whitish, blackish and a small amount of cover is going to be left to make it stand out from the other features.
There is also going to be page number at the bottom of the page and there is also going to be a website at the bottom.
On the other double page spread there is going to be an interview, it would be about a jazz celebrity who will be interviewed. The titles of the interview are going to be of a larger size compared to the answers, the questions are also going to be written in bold to make them standout.
On all three the double page spreads there is going to be a title. I am going to be creating a title to place on my double page spread to keep the interest levels high.
Overall I think all three Magazine double page spreads have quite a mixture of features this mixture would maintain the interest levels. Once the interest levels have increased we have to remeber that customers would continue buying our jazz magazines.
I am know going to start creating and developing my magazine double page spread.
I have decided to go with mock up three. I am following mock up three as I think that type of magazine would be great to develop. I would doing an interview on the left handside of the double page spread, the interview questions and answers would be in staright kline. There is also an image that is going to be placed on the left hand bottom corner. This image would be of the celebrity I am interviewing.
